The Glitch

intro

The story goes as follows. I recently got to know that an old friend of mine has organized a multiple day bike event. Already 5 times! This means that we organized such an event for the very first time in the same year without knowing about each other’s plans. His event cought on and took place every year and mine was cancelled due heavy rain and I never tried to organize it again.

But now!

His story has motivated me so I thought I’d give it an another go and start by doing what I do best and code an event site to it. Then…most probably my friends will see this materialized front of the event and will instatly want to be part of it. The initially planned 10 places will be fought for! …so I though. Turns out, I heavily misjudged the willingness of my people about going for a absolutely fun 3-day bike trip in the possibly rainy October.

The event won’t take place as planned but I definitely had some fun. Screens and some more info below.

idea

I named my trip: The Glitch. Wanted to be themed around the idea of space travel, glitches, galaxy and neon lights with a pinch of steam punk vibes. (Subconsciously this whole idea must have something to do with my ever growing love for AstroJS.)

setup

AstroJS SSR

the process of overengineering

  1. I made a static website with the basic info.
  2. Bought a domain.
  3. Realized that EVERYONE can see my genuis event plan.
  4. Turned the project to an astro SSR and added a login screen.
  5. Polished the sections for itinerary, team challenges and briefing.
  6. Configured the DNS records - waited 2 days until it was propagated, checked multiple times with the propagation tool
  7. Created a GPX track file for the trip with the amazing openroute service
  8. Implemented a leaflet.js map rendering based on the GPX file.
  9. Implemented an elevation profile rendering based on the GPX file.
  10. Added a hero image.
  11. Turned the hero image to a video with an AI video morph tool, looped it and used that as a hero video.
  12. Told my friends about the event and sent them the site, eagerly waiting for them to sign up.
  13. ONE!!11! friend said that he’d be in maybe.
  14. At this point (yes, only here) I realized that all this could have been a WhatsApp message.

screens

Look at this screens and say it afterwards that you don’t want to be part of such an event where the event page looks like this.. Say. It. C’mon!
